Chain was invited to spend a working week in Santiago, Chile, advising the Government of Chile on behalf of the World Health Organisation/Pan American Sanitary Bureau 'on the possible improvement in their antibiotic production especially with regard to penicillin production' (see J.120 for correspondence re terms of arrangements). He was accompanied by his elder son, Benjamin. Chain also visited other colleagues and firms in North and South America.
