Notes

Edited by Godfrey Smith
Includes translations of selected articles from various late-C17th and early-C18th-century periodicals, and of dissertations by P. van Musschenbroek, C.H. Haenel, Gottfried Rothe, and J.H. Winkler
Published in parts, initially under the title Acta Germanica or, The literary memoirs of Germany, &c. ... , London : Printed for and by G. Smith ... , 1742. In 1750 a French translation by Marc Antoine Eidous appeared (Mémoires littéraires, sur différens sujets, Paris : Cailleau, 1750) in which a selection of articles from both volumes appeared, including one from vol.2 p.134. In his dedication to the fourth edition of The laboratory; or, School of Arts ... , 1755, Smith notes he has suspended continuation of Acta Germanica for want of encouragement, but hopes "not only to finish the Second Volume, but likewise to compleat my Design" However no material appears to have been added after 1750, and the present work is a re-issue with cancel title leaf of the original sheets of Acta Germanica. Vol.2 is substantially smaller than vol.1 and has no index or title leaf, but its text concludes with a "Finis"
Copy 1 Supplier/Donor: Blackwell's cat. (April) Note: Two vols. bound as one. Imperfect: wanting final leaf of index to vol.1. Binding: C19th? mottled calf-backed boards, vellum corners. Early calligraphic book-plate of G.B. Strutt, his ownership signature deleted from t.p.
