Description

Photograph of three statues of St Jerome, also known as Jerome of Stridon (c.342-420), St Veronica also known as Berenike, and St Anthony the Hermit (c.468-c.520).

St Jerome is the patron saint of scholars and students and is invoked against diseases of the eye. The statue was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R612/1938) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.

St Veronica is holding a wood carving of the face of Jesus. She is invoked against female complaints. The statue was purchased by the Museum and accessioned in 1938 (accession number R449/1938) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.

St Anthony is the patron saint of solitary life and invoked against ergotism, skin ailments and animal diseases. The statue was purchased in Spain by the Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4797/1937). It is not held by Wellcome Collection
