About this work

Description

These lithographs are derived from the dance of death frescos painted on the walls of the churchyard of the Dominican cloister in Basel. Executed between 1437 and 1441, these frescos were often altered and were finally removed in 1805 when damage could not be further restored. Some of the wall fragments are preserved in the history museum in Basel

Der Tod zum Schuster. Komm her, du alter Samatier! Sprich kurz, thut dir mein Knieriem' weh? Vorbeii ist's nun mit Fleck und Sohlen, ich thu dich auf die Zunft abholen. Antwort des Schusters. Halt! ich bin nicht von Eisenblech, dass du mich also führst in's Pech; ich war genug geplagt im Leben, was willst du mir noch Schläge geben? Bears number top right : No. 40.
