    PREFACE The following experiments were performed in the Physio- logical Laboratories of the University of Liverpool, during the period extending from October 1911 to June 1912, The subject I have chosen for this Thesis was suggested to me by Professor Sherrington, I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his kind assistance and valuable advice given to me throughout the whole of this research.
