About this work

Description

The top eight drawings show various configurations of wrinkles on foreheads. Lavater reminds us in the text accompanying the published engraving of his principle of 'homogeneity': each feature expresses the form of the whole. The outlines of foreheads are repetitions from volume II,i., p. 236 (see frame no. 9401L); Lavater also repeats in the text his assertion that straight lines cannot be found in nature. All the lines here show impossible foreheads; the drawing of the head in the centre is intended to show a real profile
