Description

Receipt book: ff 1-2 have several imprints of a stamp with a gryphon's (?) head "Mr W F Gostling"; not clear if he is the same "William Gostling Esqre, Drs Commons London" whose signature appears on f 5. A loose sheet "Memorandum from International Hotel Employe Society (Geneva Union)" dated March 9 1891 and addressed to "Miss Gosling" [sic] has been inserted between ff 6 and 7

ff 7v-12 contains a tabulation of garden vegetables and herbs with hints on their culture, from "Page 60 Vol 1752, Gents Mag"

ff 14- 15 Index [incomplete] to contents

ff 17v-64 Culinary, household, cosmetic, and medical recipes in several hands. These include "To render shoes waterproof" (ff 19v-20), a "certain cure for the ague, but must not be given to pregnant women as likely to produce Abortion" (f 20v); curry powder (f 21); "to destroy bugs" (f 26), "Mary Gostling's Receipt: Sea-weed steeped in rum is a very good thing to strengthen the limbs of a young child" (f 41). There are a number of medical prescriptions together at ff 33v-36, including several "Baby's receipts" and "Sir Astley Cooper's application to sore nipples".

Between ff 56v and 57 there is a prescription with a note to 'Dear Annie' about its use. ff 64v- 233 are blank, there is a recipe "to be taken when the cough is troublesome" on f 233v.
