About this work

Description

Various items of business correspondence, including copy letters by Burroughs, manuscript letters in draft (often verso the copy letters), some notes, orders, and some letters received. Almost all material from January and February 1893.

Includes:

5 January 1893. Letter from T [?F] Earl to Robert Sudlow, "replying to your letter asking for particulars of Malt Extract &c process for a doctor in Genoa". A detailed account [4 sheets], ending with the postscript: "The photographs will follow in about 10 days." With a note from Burroughs (dated 8 December 1892) - "give particulars of experiments showing activity of Ess & Ext in digesting starch." Burroughs then refers to notes prepared by Dr Bokenham "a year ago or more for Mr Ball - "these might be very useful if copied...."

9 January, 1893. Letter from Sir Henry Thompson [1820-1904], who has tried "the tablets [Sulphonal] you were good enough to send" and reports favourably. The letter has Burroughs's draft response on the same sheet, including a reference to Henry Stanley's introduction. Burroughs then remarks: "Is the Congo Chest ready to hand to him [-] to be ready if he is suddenly called to Africa."

10 January, 1893. Letter from Mr Fletcher of Fletcher, Fletcher & Stevenson regarding a patented Thermos Urinometer, with Burroughs's draft reply verso.

Newspaper cutting headed "Missionary News" about the founding of a church in the Upper Congo. Annotated by Burroughs (20 January, 1893), who donates £2 and offers a medicine chest.

10 February, 1893. Letter from Frank S[mith?] (National Liberal Club), referring to "the Harcourt letter on Taxation & Ground Values."

Letters of 15 February (Burroughs Wellcome & Co to Burroughs) and 21 March (Cheney & Preyer to Burroughs), both 1893, concerning forthcoming Chicago Exhibition (with "sketch from Messrs Benham & Froud for the proposed railing to go round our exhibits"). Letter of 15 February includes (first paragraph) a note that twenty shares in the Tottenham & Wood Green "Star" have been purchased according to instructions.

25 February, 1893. From Chicago, Burroughs to Mr [Collett] Smith on "the distribution you are making of the single tax papers." Refers to local Dartford distribution.
