Intended to be divided and sewn on to clothing. A similar print of the magi, also on red silk, is illustrated in M. Beer and U. Rehm, loc. cit. The cloth was thought to have acquired protective powers from the fact that it had touched the reliquary containing the bodies or heads of the magi in Cologne cathedral
