Description

Three disabled people describe their sense of connection with Joseph Merrick ['the Elephant Man'].Inspired by passages written about and by Merrick, they describe in often very moving depth how it feels to live with their own disabilities. Jonathan Evans, archivist at the London Hospital, shows artefacts from Joseph Merricks's time as the London Hospital's most famous patient.

Behind the Shadow of Merrick was made for the Royal London Hospital Museum and Archive by film maker David Hevey in collaboration with archivist Jonathan Evans. It is part of Rethinking Disability Representation, a large scale experimental project, developing new ways through wich museums and galleries can challenge stereotypes of disabled people and engage visitors in contemporary and often contested debates around disability. Rethinking Disability Representation is a Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) project.
