    INTRODUCTION. 1. One of the chief difficulties in teaching many subjects arises from the circufnstance that the pupil is unable to appreciate the bearing that those sub- jects have on the conditions of his daily life. The result is that he does not approach them in the frame of mind that he bears toward ordinary questions that arise in relation to his natural sur- roundings, so that the teaching of them is liable to become artificial, and the teacher feels that he is not doing good work. There is no excuse for the existence of this condition in regard to a subject of such interest as Hygiene, because this touches the events of everyday life in a very intimate manner. It is one which lends itself well to the exercise of proper methods of teaching, for the teacher who approaches it in the right spirit cannot fail continually to gain new aspects of it that will endow him with an enthusiasm that he will not fall short of imparting to many of his pupils. 2. Before the treatment of the subject itself is commenced, the attention of the teacher is drawn to the circumstance that the matter in the following pages is divided into two parts.
