About this work

Description

Colour advertising card for Brown's iron bitters. Issued by the Brown Chemical Co. of Baltimore (probably about 1890) it shows a portrait of a dark-haired woman in a frilly black coat viewed through broken glass - to give the impression of a headache. A panel below her states that they cure malaria, dyspepsia and 'female infirmities' (menstrual disorders?)
