About this work

Description

This text was composed in the Yuan period (1206-1368). The illustration reproduced here is taken from an edition of 1515 (10th year of the Zhengde reign period of the Ming dynasty). It shows a portly gentleman with his chest and belly bared. His hair is tied in a topknot. The names of the acupoints are inscribed in corresponding locations on his rotund belly. It served as a visual aid to the practitioner in recalling the distribution of the abdominal points for acupuncture and moxibustion. (See 'Lettering' for list of point names).
