    occasionally noticed in the healing of an ulcer, to all appearance well disposed to cicatrize, is dependent on causes in respect to its edge and adjoining structures similar to those to wliich I have referred the non- closure of apertures in the soft palate. It is my purpose in the following pages to inquire how far such an analogy holds good : and what are the practical inferences which its existencewould sugoest. During the last century the attention of the French surgeons was specially directed to the subject of ulcers and their cicatrization. Garengeot taught that the material or blastema which repau's the waste constantly sustained by the animal organism, also repairs the loss occasioned by wounds or ulcers; and that by the progressive conversion of this blastema into flesh, voids thus occasioned are eventu- ally filled up. Quesnay objected to Garengeot's views, but only so far as they appeared to favour the doctrine of perfect regeneration: for he says, II est certain que les molecules de ce sue (le sue nourricier) qui s'appliqueraient les uns aux autres, ne formeroient, en alloiigeant les parties coupees, qu'ne concretion ou un massif informe au lieu d'un tissu organise, tel que parvit etre la substance carniforme qui s'eleve sur les plaies et les ulcers.* * Traits de la Suppuration.
