The woman concerned was the author of the memoir Schroeiplekken ["Scorchmarks"], which was published in 1978 under the pseudonym Carla van Lier. In Auschwitz, she had been treated with intra-uterine injections of formaldehyde and talc to induce sterility by inflammation of the Fallopian tubes. In 1979 she was treated for endometrial carcinoma by a total extirpation of uterus and tubes. The pathologist found the foreign materials and questioned the cause. The patient then told her story and showed the tattoo of the Auschwitz camp on her arm (letter to the Wellcome Library from Professor F.B. Lammes, 17 July 2004)
