Patients at the Schieffelin Leprosy Research Sanatorium in India are often cured of their leprosy but suffer severe damage and ulceration to their feet because of a loss of pain sensation. The plastercast is a good way of protecting the foot whilst allowing the patient to remain active. Sandals ad new ways of walking can also help.
