    PREFACE. >000- IN presenting the following pages to the world, I feel myself influenced by the same feelings which would impel a pilot who had severely damaged his vessel against a concealed rock, to warn other navigators of the lurking danger . I do not intend to boast, when I assure my readers, that I here pre sent them with an opportunity of acquiring the ve ry best kind of experience ; viz . that which is pur chased at the expence of another person, as for the certain and valuable knowledge I here tender them, I have unfortunately already paid, and fear I have still to pay a most severe and terrible price.
