Biographical note

The Queen's Nurses' Magazine commenced publication in 1904. Some correspondence (N.1/1) concerning the first issue was found among the material put aside for the writing of Mary Stocks's history. Publication was organised by the Institute's Office Committee until 1921, when a separate Magazine Committee was formed. In 1957 the Institute attempted to deal with the magazine's financial difficulties by handing over responsibility for publication to a limited company, The Queen's Nurses' Magazine Ltd, incorporated in November 1957, with the Institute's Chairmen of Council and Executive Committee, a Trustee, one of the Hon Secretaries and William Rathbone (IX) as nominal directors, and an editorial committee made up of representatives of the Institute, the Association of Queen's Nurses and the former Magazine Committee. From April 1958, the publication was called District Nursing. Losses continued, and the company was wound up in 1964. The Institute then established a Public Relations Department under the General
