Creator/production credits

The composition is attributed in the lettering to Michelangelo Merisi, il Caravaggio. Benjamin Smith probably saw this attribution on the earlier print of this composition published by Boydell, for whom Smith had worked from 1787 if not earlier

Reproduction note

Possibly after a mezzotint 'From the original picture in the collection of Richard Archdall Esq.r", published by John Boydell in 1783 (in the same direction), also said to be after "Michael Angelo da Caravaggio". The painting passed via George Byng to the Wrotham Park Collection, Hertfordshire, and was successively reattributed to other painters: Ribera, Andrea Vaccaro, and latterly to G.A. Galli, lo Spadarino (Gash, loc. cit., and Treves, loc. cit.)
