    An offensive trade which had Teen established without your authority and in an unsuitable position, was discontinued. 3 house sink drains having direct communication with the sewer were u disconnected,” and the drain of a water closet which passed through a dwelling house was removed ; three other defective water closet drains were put into order. The yard paving of a considerable number of dwelling houses was repaired. 11 Cases of overcrowded dwelling houses and 27 of dirty houses were dealt with. 2 Public Schools were disinfected and in one of them the means of ventilation greatly improved ; a great proportion of the Public Schools in this Borough are very deficient in the provisions made for the proper admission of fresh air ; attention is now being given to this subject. 207 Houses were inspected after cases of infectious diseases. 185 of these were disinfected by your officers, the diseases were 130 of Scarlet Fever, 17 of Diphtheria, 25 of Phthisis, 1 of Typhoid Fever, and 2 of Small Pox. About 9000 tons of house refuse were removed during the year. Slaughter houses, Daries, Cowsheds, Bakehouses, &c., have been systematically visited, they were, with few minor exceptions found satisfactory. Under the Factory and Workshops Act, 77 inspections were made, in 21 cases defective arrangements were found, in each case immediate action was taken to remedy the defect.
