About this work

Description

Leeds 1842 - eleven year old Hannah Dyson's leg has been crushed in a factory accident and must be amputated. This four minute dramatisation, taken from the Thackray Museum's award-winning displays, vividly recreates the tense moments in the operating theatre as the surgeon and his assistants prepare for a major amputation under the nervous eyes of four medical students. Based on a real amputation carried out at Leeds General Infirmary, the video is an ideal introduction to the history of surgery for GCSE pupils, and graphically introduces the problems faced by surgeons in an era before anaesthetics, antiseptics and blood transfusion.
