    benefit to some of the distressing symptoms, such as cough and difficulty breathing. Experiments, with a view of ascertaining the simplest means using these agents, being now in course of trial, remarks on their use aj reserved for a subsequent Report. Counter-irritation has been found useful in many cases in which local coi gestion existed, or in which cough and abundant secretion were distressinjj In many of these cases, a solution of Iodine and Iodide of Potassium Alcohol sufficiently strong to produce vesication, applied with a camel’s-lu brush, was found remarkably beneficial. Night Sweats have been relieved in very many cases, by the use of Gallfj Acid in doses of five or six grains, combined with Morphia; in the treatmei of Diarrhoea, recent experience has shown that the Trisnitrate of Bismuth, wh( perseveringly administered, often proves a most safe and effectual remedy. In concluding this first Report, the medical officers of the Hospital fc Consumption hope to be able hereafter to continue the production of equall systematic and definite illustrations, not only of subjects not fully noticed her< but of others of equal interest; and thus, whilst rendering the Institutio useful in developing or confirming scientific and practical knowledge as well as in relieving the objects of the charity, to demonstrate ho1 happily the advancement of science may be combined with the exercise c benevolence.
