About this work

Description

There is more than a hint of rigor mortis in the dog's stiff legs, and a general decrepitude not inconsistent with death

The dog lies on a thick rug, a helmet and a medieval-style loom in the background

The picture represents Countess, a bloodhound belonging to Jacob Bell. After the dog's death, Bell took the carcass to Landseer to paint it
