Description

Patent of Nobility [Freiherrnstand], signed by Francis I, Emperor of Austria: in German. The last leaf is signed 'Franz' (i.e. Francis I, Emperor of Austria [1768-1835]): below are the signatures of Aloys von Ugarty [1749-1817]; First Chancellor, Prokop [II] von Lazansky [1771-1823], Chancellor, and Johann von Geissler. In the lower border 'Franc[iscus] Bittner scrip[sit]'. On the verso of this leaf: 'Registrirt Michael Edler von Seusel.' Produced in Vienna.

Physical description

1 volume 14 ll. (last bl.). folio. 361/2 × 30 cm. On vellum: crimson velvet binding, with 8 black and yellow silk ties, and appended red wax seal (broken) in flat round brass case (15 cm. diameter). Calligraphic pen-drawn title-page, within a historiated border containing the arms of the states of the Austrian Empire: text within ornamental borders: in large gothic script. The tenth leaf contains the emblazoned arms of the recipient in gold and colours: these are repeated in black on the 12th leaf.

Biographical note

A. J. von Stifft was chief physician to the Emperor and Director of Medical Studies at Vienna.
