    Whether a foetus can receive the infe^ffion of the fmalhpox, or any other contagious diftemper, from its mother in the womb, is a quef- tion which appears not to have been fatisfaftorily folved. Many eminent phyfiologifts have been divided in their opinions upon this fubjeft. I In the cafe publiilied by Mr. John Hunter, in 1777, the point is far from being afeertained, to the full conviflion of that celebrated teach- er’s own mind; fince, after having related the cafe, he colleils the beft authorities on both fides of the queftion, and leaves the decilion to the reader’s own judgment.
