Oidtober, 1959c Mr. Cbiaiirman, Ladlies and Gentlemen, I have pleasure in presenting my Annual Report on the Health of the County during the year 1958. Thlls year I have to tell you that Dr. Tayldr, Asisiiistant County Medical Officer, retired on 31st August, lafter twelve years’ service. Her work was chiefly in North Westmiorland and the mothers and Children of that re;g!ion will have cause to remember her services in the sphere of Child 'Welfare work. iShe has been succeeded by Dr. R. J. K. Taliack. Mr. Ian Fletcher, the Assistant Dental Surgeon, also resigned at the end of August to commence private practice. He has been succeeded by Mr. G. Austin. Lastly, Dr. J. Munro Camp¬ bell, who fbir so many years; held the position of Superintendent at Meathop Sanatorium and' Tuberculosis Officer for Westmorland. Dr. Campbell has almost grown up With Meathop Sanatorium, with which he was asisociated for 30 years. His knowledge of tubercu¬ losis as a physician, was isecond to none and he earned and held the respect of the many doctors in Westmorland with whom he came in contact. In addition to his professional ability, he is possessed of considerable personal charm which endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. We will greatly miss him. He has been succeeded by Dr, R. Douglas Young. We w'ish Dr. Taylor and Dr. Campbell well in their retirement and hope they will have many yearsi leift to follow their natural oursuits. We also wish Mr. Fletcher the best of success in his new venture. Turning tO the Vital 'Statistics for the year, there has been, a small drop in the estimated number of population of the County. The Birth and Death Rates are correspondingly lower and higher than the previous year. The d'istrtibution dbes not follow any sighificant pattern.
