About this work

Description

Broadcaster Naomi Alderman discusses the lesser-known elements of Nurse Florence Nightingale's work, principally collecting statistical medical data. She quotes from diary entries by Florence and Parthenope Nightingale, as well as contemporary writings on the nursing profession. Alderman also talks to Dr Rosemary Wall about the statistical publications and comparative data Nightingale produced. Alderman discusses Nightingale's diagrammatic illustrations with Statistician David Spiegelhalter. They talk about Nightingale's use of statistical data and data visualisation for rhetorical purposes and to influence policy. They also speculate how Nightingale might react to 21st Century evidence-based medicine.
