About this work

Also known as

Recent advances in the treatment of fractures

Description

Part 4 opens with an intertitle describing 'Case 3' which lasts approximately 10 minutes; this involves a man with a fracture of the tibia and fibula. X-rays illustrate the 'deformity'. In the operating theatre, the surgeon prepares the surgical bed (levers and winches are reminiscent of a D-I-Y work bench); then the leg is pinned and secured in place using plaster of paris. The patient returns to the ward and is held in traction. The plaster cast is removed. On the ward, the male patient totters about. His treatment progresses (a chart is provided). 'Section 3' intertitle which then proceeds with a female patient and 'Fracture of the spine'. The patient has a crushed vertebrae; she is stretched out between supports and her mid-torso covered with plaster of paris. The order of circular bandages and slabs are shown diagrammatically. The patient, an old lady, is seen walking about afterwards. Under her clothes, the girdle like cast is shown.
