    heaviest. It declined in eastern districts from October, and disappeared by the end of November. Eight temporary cholera hospitals were opened in infected areas of Gonda, Basti and Gorakhpur. Kaoline, Essential oil mixture, sulphaguanidine, and specially made tablets containing sulphaguanidine Nicotinic Acid and Soda bicarb, were largely distributed for treatment. Over 39,40,800 anti-cholera inoculations were done. Plague had a considerably lower incidence, total number of deaths being 13,722 (1,259 in towns and 12,463 in rural areas) against 51,455 in 1947. The start of the year found the districts of Faizabad, Basti, Jaunpur and Muzaffarnagar, and the city of Jhansi heavily infected There was a milder prevalance in the districts of Jalaun Mirzapur, Fatehpur, Sultanpur, Unnao, Ballia, Kanpur, Saharanpur, Jhansi, Hamirpur, Deoria, Gorakhpur and the cities of Sitapur, Lucknow.and Lakhimpur-Kheri. The months of March and April showed highest intensity, after which there was a decline and total subsidence towards the end of June Infection reappeared in the month of August in Farrukhabad, Kanpur and Jhansi districts and by D ecember reports had been received from 12 others. The incidence was mild. Over 1,6,09200 anti-plauge inoculations were performed. Seventeen temporary plague hospitals with total bed-strength of 205 beds were opened in the infected areas in some of the districts. Over 1,200 cases were admitted, of which over 1,000 were discharged as cured, giving a recovery rate of 83 percent. Anti-rat and anti-flea campaign was carried out in endemic areas of several districts and municipalities, and D D T. was used extensively for spraying and dusting of rat-holes. Smallpox showed a slight increase, causing 9,629 deaths (1,959 in urban areas and 7,670 in rural areas ) agajnst 6,437 in the previous year. — Fevers—This general heading comprises malaria, enteric fever, measles, relapsing fever, Kala-azar, influenza, cerebrospinal fever, typhus fever, black water fever, and other fevers. The mortality from all fevers was 616,003 against 731,549 in the preceding year. Incidence of the more important of the fevers is discussed below :— ( a ) Malaria—The number of deaths registered under this head was 531,165 (24,213 in towns and 506,952 in rural areas) against 633,878 in 1947. ( b) Relapsing fever One hundred and twentyfive deaths ( 21 in towns and 104 in rural areas ) were registered under this head against 210 in 1947. ( c) Enteric fever- Was responsible for 10,300 deaths ( 4,003 in urban areas and 6,297 in rural ) against 11,554 in 1947. ( d ) Kala-Azar Was responsible for 146 deaths ( 94 in urban and 52 in rural areas ) against 148 in 1947. These figures are under-reported as village chaukidars are unable to distinguish it from other fevers. It has a fairly widespread incidence in eastern U. P. Ten Kala azar travelling dispensaries ( out of 2q sanctioned ) and 109 fixed dispensaries in the districts of Gorakhpur, Deoria, Banara?, Basti, Azamgarh, Gbazipur, Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Allahabad and Faizabad were equipped for investigation and treatment. Some 9,500 persons were treated. The ten travelling units surveyed over 2,600 villages with aggregate population of 441,800 and made blood examination of 11,500 cases, of which 8,600 were found positive. ( e ) Inf luenza—Was responsible for 728 deaths ( 377 in urban and 351 in rural areas ) against 439 in 1947. ( f) Cerebrospinal Meningitis—Was responsible for 78 deaths (27 in urban and 51 in rural areas ) against 45 in 1947. The incidence was sporadic. Respiratory diseases—Were responsible for 31,412 deaths'( 25,922 in urban and 5,490 in rural areas ) against 37,923 in the previous year. Pneumonia and pulmonary tuberculosis are the main diseases in this group, Figures for them were as follows 1— ( a ) Pneumonia—Was responsible for 14,093 deaths ( 13,429 in urban and 664 in rural areas ) against 16,733 in 1947. ( b ) Tuberculosis—( pulmonary ) Was responsible for 4,105 deaths ( 3,068 yP . urban and 1,037 in rural areas ) against 4,964 in 1947.
