Biographical note

Pontecorvo visited India between 20 May-26 June 1979, and again between December 1982- February 1983.

In 1979, Pontecorvo was invited by Professor Obaid Siddiqi, of the Tata Institute, Bombay, to give nine lectures on somatic cell genetics and high altitude botany at a variety of Universities and Research Institutes across India, and to conduct field work with Indian Botanists in three areas of the Himalayas. On his second visit, between 1982-83, Pontecorvo was awarded the Raman Professorship by the Indian Academy of Sciences. He participated at the 70th Session of the Indian Science Congress and divided his time between Bombay and Bangalore.
