About this work

Description

Nepal; town in the life in the Khumbu, 1986. A Sherpa family sits in the courtyard of a guest house in Namche Bazar (altitude 3446 metres) which caters for trekkers and mountaineers. Tall posts carrying Buddhist prayer banners are a feature of many houses. A brightly-coloured tin can serves as a plant holder at a first-floor window. This is a well-appointed building and the couple are well-dressed. While Sherpa men and boys frequently wear western clothes (as here), the women and girls always dress in traditional Tibetan style.
