Although in the course of the hook I shall place the fact in a clear light, it is well, nevertheless, to state in this place that the Argentine Eepuhlic must not he judged from the state of the Chaco. It must be remembered that this country, thirteen times the size of Italy, and with one-thirteenth of its population, exlrihits the most opposite extremes, from the wealthy cities of the littoral, such as Buenos Ayres, in which a more splendid life can he enjoyed than in most Italian capitals, to the estandas and ranchos on the Indian frontiers, and the foldevias of the Indians, But I will treat of this in another Avork, if readers and the Fates are propitious to me.
