Miscellaneous documents relating to medical affairs in the French armies of the Alps and Italy, 1793-1805.

1-4. Tables of medical staff attached to the army of the Alps, giving various details including age, place of birth, date of entry into service and previous employment. 1793.

5. Recommendations by the 'Conseil de Santé' for filling various apothecary posts in the French army, including the appointment of citizen Muller as apothecary in chief of the army of Italy, in place of citizen Lacour. [Paris], 20 September 1793. Signed by the members of the 'Conseil de Santé' including Bertand Pelletier (1761-1797), Philippe Jean Pelletan (1747-1829), Antoine-Augustin Parmentier (1737-1813), Pierre Bayen (1725-1798), François Dezoteux (1724-1803), and Guillaume Daignan (1732-1812).

6. Order of 'les réprésentans [sic] du peuple envoyés dans la commune affranchie pour y assurer le bonheur du peuple' relating to medical provison for the army of the Alps. La commune affranchie [Lyons], 4 pluviôse, an IV [23 January 1794]. Contemporary copy.

7. Order from citizen Gautier, 'adjoint au ministre de la guerre' to the 'commissaire ordonnateur en chef de l'armée des Alpes' for the regular submission of returns of hospital facilities available for the army. Paris, 9 pluviôse, an II [28 January 1794].

8-9. Reports by Nicholas Heurteloup (1750-1812) and citizen Morin, inspectors of military hospitals, barracks and prisons of the armies of the Alps and Italy, on the hospitals at ?Montsalier, near Moutiers [dép. Savoie] and Carrouge, Switzerland. N.p., 4 sansculottide, an II [20 September 1794] and 11 vendémaire, an III [2 October 1794]. Contemporary copies.

10. Order from François Joseph Ritter (1758-1809) and Louis Turreau de Linières (1761-1797), 'représentans du peuple près l'armée d'Italie et dans les départemens [sic] du Var et des Alpes-Martimes & l'armée des Alpes' to the director of military hospitals of the army of Italy to furnish a table of requirements to support a force of fifty thousand men on campaign. Nice, 11 brumaire, an III [1 November 1794].

11-12. Orders by Turreau, 'représentan du peuple envoyé par la Convention Nationale près les armées d'Italie et des Alpes', relating to medical provision for the army in Italy. 25 [13 February 1795], 11 ventose, an III [1 March 1795].

13. Petition from citizen Amblard, 'infirmier attaché à la phramacie de l'hospice militaire de Menton', to the 'représentans du peuple près l'armée d'Italie', requesting leave for family reasons. N.p., n.d. Subscribed with permission for unconditional leave signed by the 'représentans', including F.J. Ritter, 15 vendémiaire an IV [6 October 1795].

14. Petition from Pierre Chantre, civilian hospital employee, to the French minister of war, to be readmitted into military service with the army of the Alps. Grenoble, 27 germinal an IV [14 April 1796].

15. Letter from a senior medical officer of the 17th military division to a colleague in Montpellier concerning the French army in Italy. Parma, 9 frimaire an ?V [19 November ?1796].

16-21. Letters from various military medical correspondents to the payroll officials of the army of Italy, on salaries, May 1800-April 1802.

22. Certificate by Joseph Hélie Désiré Perruquet de Montrichard (1760-1828), 'général de division', in favour of M. ?Lausens, army surgeon, giving details of his service in Italy. Molfetta, 30 ?vendémiaire an XIV [21 October 1805].

23-24. Lists of provisions for the army of Italy despatched by citizen Hermitte. Nice, 28-30 vendémiaire n.y.

Acquisition note

About half of the documents were purchased from Charavay, Paris, between October 1928 and July 1935 (accs.63700, 63715-64716, 64700 and 69124); nos. 17 to 21 were purchased at Sotheby's, London, in February 1930 (acc.52480); the provenance of nos. 1-4, and 7-9 is unrecorded.

Ownership note

Documents 16 to 21 were formerly part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, and are accompanied by typescript transcripts. A note added to the transcript of document 17 indicates that this piece was formerly part of the Sainsbury Collection, in other words the 'Napoleon Museum' formed by John Sainsbury between 1815 and 1830, which was dispersed in 1865 (see Nicolas Barker, Bibliotheca Lindesiana, 1977, p. 320).
