I The foregoing biographical remarks were judged neccllary to precede a tranflation of Dr. Smith’s Formula^ with a view to render it more generally ufeful, as well to the public as to profeffional men. The mode of giving medical preferiptions entirely in Latin, but •which has been fo humanely and fpiritedly broken through by Dr. Buchan, is really a burlerque upon the common fenfe of man- kind. Phyficians may indeed be able to Jcrawl a Latin prefeription (and to preferve the myllery of their profeffion they often do fcrawl in a moft unintelligible manner), yet we experimentally know that apothecaries and their apprentices are not always able to develope thefe learned enigmas; and hence the moft valuable lives may be left at the mercy of a giddy or an ignorant boy. In the following preferiptions, the dofes, inftead of being exp.refled in m^Jlical chara61ers, are all given in words at length, and the moft fcrupulous regard has been paid to corre£l- ■nefs.
