About this work

Description

"The care of the diabetic patient can no longer be regarded as only within the province of the diabetic specialist, since such a specialist may only see the patient on a few occasions in any one year. The most important person in the health care team looking after the diabetic is the diabetic, who must therefore be provided with essential knowledge, training and facilities to enable him or her to provide essential self care. This is necessary to allow the diabetic to achieve an active and near normal life within the constraints set by the disorder. The provision of such care involves a coordinated effort by a diabetic health care team. Such a team, under the direction of the diabetic specialist, is made up of doctors and nurses in primary health care, dietitians, chiropodists and pharmacists, ophthalmic opticians, specialist diabetic nurses, and various other specialist in the hospital service. It is for these people that this book is intended. It outlines what is needed in the provision of a comprehensive health care service for the diabetic patient, and not only provides information on the management of diabetics, but also on the organisation of the health care team."--Provided by publisher.
