Description

German physician Professor Werner Forssmann was joint recipient of the 1956 Nobel Prize in Medicine (with Andre Cournand and Dickinson Richards) for developing the technique of cardiac catheterisation. In 1929, he performed the procedure on himself under local anesthetic, inserting a flexible catheter into a vein in his left arm and passing it up into his heart.
