About this work

Description

Advertisement probably from the 1890s that has been previously bound into a magazine (staple holes still to be seen along the left side) for Newball & Mason's original extract of herbs. It was promoted as a wholesome and refreshing drink, a tonic and, most importantly (in line with the Temperance movement of the time), a non alcoholic (and much cheaper) alternative to beer. Bees are depicted buzzing round a bottle of the extract with a clump of flowers to the left (dandelion, white dead nettle, burdock and possibly borage). The back is printed in a blue-grey and includes a smiling, young, male scientist holding a glass of the extract or 'botanic beer'.
