Surgeon at Brechin, (Referred to at page 9.) “ Bheciiix, 2 6th March, 1820. “ MY DEAR SIR, u When I had the pleasure of seeing you lately in this part of the country, I promised to communicate my senti¬ ments to you on the subject of the non-mercurial practice in Syphilis. s‘ The absolute necessity of using mercury in the cure of this disease was strongly impressed on my mind by what oc¬ curred in the Royal Artillery Hospital at Woolwich, in 1806, when I joined the regiment: Most of the venereal patients were at that time treated by the exhibition of acids; and the number of secondary cases which occurred was certainly great¬ er than v/hat I have ever seen either before or since under the mercurial treatment. cc At the time to which I allude, I would have considered it a reflection on my medical character to have discovered se¬ condary symptoms in a patient whose treatment I had been entrusted with from the beginning, but the case is now great¬ ly altered by the doctrines recently promulgated on this sub¬ ject. 66 I remain, <c My Dear Sir, 66 Very truly yours, “ JOHN SANDEMAN, “ Surgeon, II.
