    gent, yet the religion of Italy and Sicily certainly occupies a very prominent place in it; not from any superior anxiety on my part to discover points of similarity between pagan and Christian times under this department of my subject, but from the intimate and visible union which the forms of religion maintain with all the events of private life in those countries.
