About this work

Description

"This project was developed in response to the increased demand for psychiatric assesments of detained asylum seekers received by a number of psychiatrists in the West Midlands. A Picture had begun to emerge of a beleaguered group of people, many of whom had endured detention, torture and persecution in their country of origin, presenting in detention with what appeared to be symptoms of mental illness including depression, anxiety, psychosis and deliberate self harm. This project was set up to investigate the experiences of this group in greater depth in an attempt to establish why they presented as they did, how their symptoms arose, the repsonses to such symptoms and ways in which these could be prevented."-- From preface.
