    in proof of the contagion of Cholera, from the fact, that if a number of persons are exposed to that which is considered the source or cause of the disease, whilst some are affected, many escape. A little con¬ sideration of the circumstances will suffice to prove, that this is really no infraction of the law, that “ Like causes will always produce like effects.'’’ It is evident, that, in con¬ formity with this proposition, the circum¬ stances in each case ought to be precisely similar in all respects ; and, from the very constitution of the human mind, every one feels convinced, that if they were really the same, the result would be perfectly identical. But there is no truth more fully established in the mind of every medical practitioner, (even of one who has had but a limited experience in the exercise of his profes¬ sion,) than this,—that there is the greatest
