The unit was founded in 1975 "in response to the entry into Dhaka of large numbers of people in search of food and work following a famine the previous year. The CNU was established by Save the Children Fund (SCF) in order to try to save some of the children who were dying from malnutrition" (website of UK Department for International Development (DFID)).
