Description
The upper half is a calligraphy piece by Saigō Takamori, the statesman whose rebellion in 1877 had failed and made him something of a hero. He signs with his calligraphy nom-de-plume, Nanshu. The lower half of the sheet, the woodcut of a peony and berries by Katei, is entitled 'Prosperity and one hundred children" and is dated 1880 in the inscription
