    INTRODUCTION GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS On March 28th, 1906, the Senate of the University of London resolved to invite the Faculties of Letters and Sciences of the University of Paris, and the College de France, to visit the University of London in the June following. M. Liard, the President of the Council of the University of Paris, was also requested to include repre- sentatives of the provincial Universities of France in the list of those to whom invitations were to be forwarded ; and special invitations were issued to the Directors of Higher, Secondary, and Elementary Education in the French Ministry of Public Instruction. The invitation coincided with an invitation from the Modern Language Association to the members of the Soci^t^ des Professeurs de Langues vivantes and the Guilde Internationale of Paris, and it was therefore decided to in- vite a certain number of representatives of these Societies to join the party of University guests, and also to co- operate with the Modern Language Association generally, as far as possible, in entertaining the ladies and gentlemen invited by them. An Executive Committee was formed consisting of the following : Sir Edward Busk, Vice-Chancellor, Chairman of the Committee ex-officio. Sir Walter Palmer, Bart., Member of the Senate, Vice- Chairman of the Committee. Sir Arthur Rucker, F.R.S., Principal Mr. Cloudesley Brereton. Sir William Collins, M.P., Member of the Senate. « b
