About this work
Description
Bible. N.T. Matthew 27.26-30; Mark 15.15-20; Luke 23.16-22; John 19.1-2. The high priest sits in a chair. The man scourging Christ is not dressed as a soldier and may be intended to be a Jew. However, the scene is conflated with the scourging by the Roman soldiers, who stand waiting on the right with their spears in the air. On the ground are a bowl, twigs, string and a whip. Christ is attached to the small column by a thin rope
