    And now we are joined by the resident medical officer, Mr. Walker, who had been described to us as not only efficient in his onerous duties, but genial with the children, and never failing to win their confidence and affection—qualifications essential in the nurses in a sick child’s hospital, but not always to be secured in the doctor. Escorted by him and by the Lady Superintendent, let us now take a turn through the wards, though we can only notice here a few cases. Only one child is cry- ing. It is a little girl, four years old, who is sitting up in her little bed, and stretching out her arms. “ What is she crying for ? ” we ask. “ It is for her ‘ mammy,’ ” the matron says.
