    Influenza, as in preceding years, prevailed extensively during the months of Januaiy, February and March. No deaths are however ascribed to it, but I have no doubt that several of the inflammatory lung diseases which proved so unusually fatal, had their origin with a preliminary attack of this insidious complaint. The Sanitary Improvements effected in 1896 have been considerable. New sewers have been laid to the extent of 1700 yards. The widening and improvements in Lower-scout road have been completed, also the widening of the footpath in King- street. Building’ Operations have surpassed in importance those of any previous year. Fifty-seven newly-built houses have become occupied, and there remained at the close of the year sixty-six others built or in process of building. I have inspected the various bake-houses. They are kept in excellent order, with one or two exceptions, and are lime- washed at fixed periods. The five registered lodging-houses have also received my attention, and are generally clean and in good order. No infectious diseases have occurred in any of them.
