Reproduction note

After oil painting 'La fiancée de la mort' (18389; Victoria Art Gallery, Bath), commissioned for Princess Marie (daughter of Louis Philippe): it received the Cross of the Legion of Honour, the Gold Medal of the Musée Royal, and the first prize of the City of Cambrai. It was inspired by the death of a friend of the artist, who had written the ballad, 'The bride of death'
