About this work

Description

Photocopy of a (relatively recent) typescript copy of a letter from Burroughs to Wellcome with an original date of 29 May 1882. Together with a photocopy of a "related" drawing by the depositor (drawing dated 4 October, 1954). Transfer records indicate that the photocopy was made in 1999. (NB The relationship between the drawing and Burroughs's letter would appear to be its subject - a Tonga tree (see below) - rather than the stated location, Nyali Beach, which is in Kenya.)

The letter offers a lyrical description of the local "luxuriant" vegetation - "a subject in which you may take some interest especially as you have some enthusiasm in the subject of Botany and much for Medical Botany" - especially "the celebrated Tonga tree."

The letter also provides a glimpse of Burroughs smitten with "a little affection of the heart from which I had been suffering somewhat but think likely I shall recover in due season."
