Biographical note

In 1997 the Wellcome Trust submitted a planning application to South Cambridgeshire District Council for a 40,000 sqm extension to its Genome Campus. The Council objected and following an appeal by the Trust the application was considered at a public inquiry commencing 9 June 1998. Permission was eventually refused in 1999, although it was acknowledged that the extension of the Campus was in the national interest and a smaller extension would have been approved. In November 2002 planning permission was granted for a revised 27,000 sqm extension, to include research facilities for scientists and genomics companies.
